The Shadow Runner
The Shadow Runner
A Ship Not of the Hold
Among the vessels that operate in the Hypnoth system, one ship does not belong.
It does not appear in the official fleet registries of Vôrun Hold.
It was not constructed in the Hold’s industrial shipyards.
It does not participate in the great cycles of extraction that define the Hold’s economy.
And yet its arrival was recorded.
Not as an industrial vessel.
Not as a military asset.
But as something else entirely.
In the Hold’s central data archives, the event appears under a single entry.
External Intervention – Thurian League
The ship responsible for that entry is known only by one name.
The Margin Runner.
Among the Kin of Vôrun Hold it is more commonly referred to as:
The Shadow Runner.
A Vessel Outside the Ledger
The Kin record everything.
Every shipment of ore.
Every recovered fragment of archeotech.
Every ship that enters the system.
Nothing escapes the Ledger.
Yet the Shadow Runner exists in an unusual category.
It was recorded.
But never integrated into the fleet.
It arrived quietly in the Hypnoth system without announcing its presence to the Hold’s outer patrols.
It remained only long enough to complete its mission.
Then it departed.
No escort.
No convoy.
No public explanation.
Only a brief annotation in the archives.
Physical Specifications
Vessel Classification: Covert Operations Craft
League Designation: Thurian Margin Runner Pattern
Length: 64 meters
Width: 38 meters
Height: 14 meters
Mass: 3,800 tonnes
Crew: 8 Kin
Compared to the rugged industrial vessels of Vôrun Hold, the Shadow Runner is remarkably compact.
Its mass is less than a quarter of a typical Corvette and barely a fraction of the massive industrial ships that dominate the Hold’s fleet.
But this small size is deliberate.
The vessel is designed for stealth, speed, and precision insertion.
Design Philosophy
The ships of Vôrun Hold are built with a clear purpose.
They are durable.
Industrial.
Capable of decades of hard work in hazardous environments.
The Shadow Runner follows a completely different philosophy.
It is designed for missions that are never publicly acknowledged.
Everything about the ship prioritizes:
• minimal detection
• high acceleration
• rapid insertion and extraction
• independent operation
Where the ships of the Hold resemble mining machinery adapted for space, the Shadow Runner feels closer to a blade hidden in the dark.
Hull Architecture
The Shadow Runner’s hull is sleek compared to the heavily armored vessels of the Hold.
Its structure is built around a narrow central spine containing propulsion systems and mission compartments.
The ship is divided into three primary sections.
Command Module
The forward section houses the cockpit and tactical systems.
Unlike the exposed bridges of many industrial ships, the Shadow Runner’s command module is heavily shielded and embedded within the hull structure.
Sensor systems focus on passive detection rather than active scanning.
The vessel is designed to observe without being noticed.
Insertion Bay
The central hull contains a compact deployment chamber.
This compartment is not designed for vehicles or heavy cargo.
Instead it is optimized for the rapid deployment of a small number of heavily armored Kin warriors.
Magnetic restraint racks secure the warriors during high-acceleration maneuvers.
When the ship reaches its destination, the chamber opens to allow the team to deploy immediately.
Engine Assembly
The rear section contains an oversized propulsion cluster relative to the ship’s size.
These engines provide exceptional acceleration.
The Shadow Runner is capable of entering and leaving hostile space before most sensor systems can react.
This ability is essential for the vessel’s intended missions.
The Mission
The Shadow Runner’s appearance in the Hypnoth system had a single objective.
To deliver a small group of elite Kin warriors.
These warriors were not part of the military structure of Vôrun Hold.
They did not report to the Hold’s Kâhl.
They did not join the Hold’s fleet operations.
Instead they belonged to a specialized formation known as:
Uthar’s Margin.
Uthar’s Margin
Within the Greater Thurian League, Uthar the Destined commands a group of Hearthguard warriors who operate beyond normal military hierarchies.
They are deployed only in situations where the League believes the balance of events may have broader consequences.
Their missions are rarely explained.
Their presence is rarely acknowledged.
When Uthar’s Margin was deployed to the Hypnoth system, the reason was never publicly stated.
But the Ledger recorded their arrival.
And that fact alone suggests the Hold understood the importance of the moment.
The Arrival
The Shadow Runner entered the Hypnoth system without using the primary navigation routes monitored by the Hold’s Survey Cutters.
It appeared at the edge of the outer debris field and approached the system quietly.
Even the patrol routes of the Vôrun Corvettes did not intercept it.
When it finally reached the orbital zone of Vôrun Hold, it did not request docking clearance.
Instead it transmitted a short identification code.
That code confirmed the ship’s origin.
Greater Thurian League authority.
Moments later, the vessel deployed its passengers.
The Departure
Once the Hearthguard had disembarked, the Shadow Runner did not remain in the system.
It did not join the Hold’s fleet.
It did not participate in any operations.
Within hours of completing its mission, the ship departed the Hypnoth system along a trajectory that avoided the primary trade routes.
Its engines burned briefly.
Then the vessel disappeared into the void.
The Record
In the Hold’s archives, the event is preserved in a single line.
External Intervention – Thurian League
No further explanation accompanies the entry.
The Kin of Vôrun Hold rarely speculate about the actions of the League.
But many understand the implication.
If the Thurian League chose to send Uthar’s Margin to the Hypnoth system, then something within those ruins was significant enough to attract the attention of the most powerful Kin in the galaxy.
And the Shadow Runner was the vessel that carried that decision.
The Ship That Does Not Belong
The fleets of Vôrun Hold are easy to recognize.
Industrial hulls.
Armored frames.
Ships designed for decades of hard labor in dangerous environments.
The Shadow Runner is something else entirely.
It does not mine.
It does not salvage.
It does not haul cargo.
It appears only when the League itself chooses to intervene.
And when its mission is complete, it disappears again.
A ship not of the Hold.
But one the Ledger will never forget.
