Vôruns Wall - How to paint Leagues of Votann Hearthguard

I got these Hearthguard from a great warhammer enthusiast in the local area who had build and primed them with a bronze primer.

My direction for the army design was inspired by the Trans Hyperian League and some of the work of pantheonofpaint and fletchers_painting on Instagram.

To get from here to there I needed to do the following things:

  • Paint with Uthuan Grey

  • Drybrush with white scar

  • Shade with Apothecary white

That process got me the result you see above. I avoided a second primer to not lose detail.

Next step was to pick out the details for the Brëkkeknots next in gold because I think that looks cool.

Really like the Hearthguard models with these details here. The process for this was:

  • Base with Zandri dust

  • Paint with Retributor Gold

  • Shade with Reikland Fleshshade

This combines a few things I learned online for undercoating with browns to give the gold a certain hue and making it less streaky. You find a good tutorial for this from Artis Opus for free on YouTube. The tip for Reikland Fleshshade with gold instead of Agrax Earthshade is from a video I watched when painting my world eaters up.

For the orange I picked out some panels and wanted each Hearthguard to be individual.

While doing this I also had the idea that some of the members of this unit have come from other leagues. A bit like deathwatch for the squats.

For the Orange follow the freely available Warhammer tutorial including the following steps:

  • Base Jakaero orange

  • Layer Troll slayer Orange

  • Shade Magmadroth flame

  • Edge Highlight Ushabti bone

Take care if you use Magmadroth flame as it is very potent and is meant as a recess fill for shadows and not all over the panels. The orange against the white are more forgiving than the internet sometimes wants to make you believe. Coverage with Jakaero was very good.

The idea for the blue and yellow blasters came from migsula on Instagram. I just did not want black or metal blasters as I had done this so often and thought that would be cooler.

I did not know yet that would make the models a little too busy for the “deathwatch” idea I had. You live and learn. Here is what I did for this:

Yellow

  • Imperial Fists contrast

  • Screaming Skull Highlight

Dark blue / Teal

  • Leviadon blue contrast

  • Altaoic blue Highlight

  • Hoeth blue highlight

I find that experimenting with the citadel app is useful when you are looking for certain colors.

Of course that is if you like the citadel color range and I get that some may deem it too expensive and opt for Vallejo or other options.

This is the entire unit before edge highlights. The E champ was painted before the unit and inspired by an artist on Instagram who I unfortunately can not find anymore.

Below you see the result after applying a base mix simulating a Necron home world and highlighting all the individual Hearthguard.

The helmets have been done in the following way:

  • Leadbelcher base

  • White Scar on visors

  • Frostheart on visors

  • Drakenhof Nightshade as shade

  • Sponge a tiny bit of Stromhost silver for battle damage

I hope this is helpful and pragmatic for someone who likes these scheme.
